Each California Safari features multiple workshops by talented faculty who are experts in their fields.

The global innovation session of the California Safari is designed for students with interests in foreign relations and developing their own startup company. The session emphasizes leadership development, and draws on historical examples and contemporary issues to help students think strategically and negotiate potential responses to complex dilemmas.

California Safari brings together faculty members who have started and successfully sold their startup companies, taking their profits, funds and experiences into yet another startup adventure.

Students attend lectures and seminars on topics such as leadership development, innovation and technology, communication, public relations, decision-making, social networks, self-awareness and strategic thinking. Students also work in teams throughout the program to develop a business project and write a report, ending with a presentation to an audience of instructors and fellow students.

Students also participate in a startup pitch simulation, learn about careers in the fields of their choice, innovation, and how companies grow globally into international organizations, learning and adapting to disruption and new growth opportunities.

While not formally required, students interested in California Safari’s innovation workshop should have some background in high school history and social studies. Because the program has a strong interdisciplinary focus, students with significant background in international relations and global affairs are encouraged to apply, as are students with other academic interests who want to learn more about widely applicable topics in strategic thinking, policymaking, and leadership development.

The Entrepreneurship and Innovation portions of the California Safari target students with interests in emerging global challenges in fields such as global health, environment, and energy, all areas that require technical expertise and innovative leadership.

This session will combine cutting edge work in science and technology with a focus on the interaction of science, technology, innovation and internet strategy. With an emphasis on developing critical-thinking skills as a startup expert, students will learn how to effectively translate complex ideas to a non-expert audience and how scientific innovation shapes and influences business success.

California Safari draws support from professors across the University levels, including Stanford University, University of California Berkeley (CAL), University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), Loyola Marymount University’s (LMU) Entrepreneurship department, and the University of Southern California (USC) Film School.

Working in teams, students develop and present a pragmatic response to a contemporary challenge in one of the core program areas. Participants have the opportunity to tour Stanford’s school of engineering and Design, the Stanford D-School. Students will also tour the University of California Berkeley while learning from UC Berkeley professors. Safari students will also hear from professionals working in both businesses and nonprofits tackling emerging global challenges.

While not formally required, students interested in innovation and startup success should have some background in high school math and science and should be familiar with the scientific method. Given the interdisciplinary focus of the session, students who have substantial science backgrounds are encouraged to apply, as are students who are interested in applying science in problem-based solutions in policy and entrepreneurial work.

In addition to the Silicon Valley experience, Safari students will travel to sunny Southern California for their second week of workshops. In addition to a trip to relax along the Pacific Ocean, students will tour and take a class at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), tour and enjoy an afternoon in the burgeoning Silicon Beach, and visit Loyola Marymount University, nestled atop the bluffs of Playa Vista.

Students will also travel inland to learn about behind-the-scenes in Hollywood, touring the famous sites along Hollywood Boulevard, visit the University of Southern California’s Film School, hear personal stories from successful musicians and actors, and learn from top professors in Southern California’s most popular universities.
